how difficult is it to create models on SL? do they need to be moddled and imported with other programs or can it be done in-game?

No. you've to do it in-game. If you've played it, you'll know there's a Build button there that let you create simple primitive like sphere, box, cone, ring, etc. You just have to adjust them into a shape :P
